Mamas Need Stillness

Motherhood is messy. Physically, emotionally and spiritually. It takes everything you have sometimes and then demands a little more. It makes the standard full  time working hours look like a part time gig and can bring a whole new meaning to the words ‘busy’ and ‘exhausted’.

But it can also be magical. It can open your heart, fill your soul with beautiful moments and awaken inner strength you never knew existed. It can change your life in extraordinary ways and reconnect you with what truly matters. And it’s easy to forget that we are shaping the next generation of inspired leaders, creators and innovators.

But to see through the chaos and really enjoy more of the journey we have to aim to be the best versions of ourselves. Our energies influence the type of lense we see through, so how we feel ultimately dictates our experience. To face the many challenges of motherhood with a positive mind and open heart as opposed to a depleted spirit we need to look at nourishing more than just our bodies.

Daily stillness rituals can be game changing for us warrior mums who tackle so much so often. Whether it’s through meditation, slow and focused breathing or any other type of stillness practice, the positive effects are endless. They can reduce  our levels of stress and anxiety, increase our mental strength and help reset our energies and general mood.

This transformative time allows us to quiet the noise of the outside world so we can hear our inner voices and realise how powerful we actually are. They help us reconnect to our intuition, our internal rhythms and our infinite wisdom that we have forgotten about or been discouraged to tap into.

Daily stillness brings much needed peace and calm into days that seem to be filled with so much doing and not enough being. It’s a time we can put the constant demands of children, of partners, of work and of life on hold for a little while. And even at its most basic form, this beautiful quiet time brings us what we so desperately crave…...a moment to ourselves.

But we need to make space for it and we need to do it often.

We need to start creating pockets of quiet where ever we can. We need to start seeing and feeling the importance of this time and the many healing benefits it brings. If we keep waiting for space to pop up in our day for a rest or for a moment to reclaim our sanity, it may not come. Good intentions are no longer enough when it comes to planning for something that can bring us so much.

And maybe we need to also challenge the notion that doing and moving is better than being still. Our endless to-to-list can often bring about guilt if we slow down or take a break.

But these moments of stillness work like a massage for the soul. They reset and refuel our spirits. They pull us out of the negative emotions we often feel as a reaction to stressful situations and redirect our energies to what we truly value and who we are or want to become. And they give back to us what the days can often take away, a moment of precious solitude.

So let’s create a movement, together. Where mothers all over the globe are making time for stillness. Where mornings start with quiet reflection rather than chaotic rushing. Where our schedules hold space for meditation, for yoga and for soothing walks along the beach. Where instead of reaching for that 3rd coffee we sit down with a nourishing cup of tea and quiet the mind for 5 mins. Where we make space for deep belly breathing, or yoga or whatever it may be that brings with it peace and calm. Each with the intention to recharge, to reconnect and listen to the powerful voices within our souls, that whisper to us softly but assuringly, “You’ve got this”
